Alexandra Underhill grew up in Elmira, New York, and came to Cleveland to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art. Having graduated with honors in 1993, Alexandra has continued with her professional work in jewelry, crafts, sculptures, installations and recently, costume and set design.
Alexandra has worked, lived and traveled through Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Central America. Her conscious integration of foreign experience, rhythms and religions is reflected in her work.
Since 1994, Alexandra has been helping co-direct the performance troupe Sub-Atomic Frequency Modulation Overdose (SAFMOD), exercising her skills in the creation of costumes, sets and props. Her unique theatrical style has led to collaborations with Gottlob & Oka dance company, where she designed costumes and props for their 1997 production of "Blue Beard," as well as her current work with choreographer Sarah Morrison. In the fall, she will be working in collaboration with Youth at Risk Dancing (YARD) directed by Bill Wade.
Alexandra has her own line of jewelry, UrbanBumpers, which currently is on exhibit with some of her sculptures at the Great Lakes Science Center, the Deering Gallery in Beachwood, the Gordon Beale Frank Gallery and Art at the Powerhouse.
