Sano was born Ayumi Chisolm, Cleveland native, the youngest son of Japanese
and Black parents in 1971. Through elementary school he was highly involved
in art classes and became interested in graffiti art as a relief from
family tension. When in high school he started practicing graffiti art and
experimented with the airbrush and computer as tools of his personal
expression.
After graduating from high school in 1989, Sano was hired at a local
screenprinting shop as an illustrator and screenprinter. In 1992 he entered
into a business partnership with friends from his graffiti crew "Doin'
Everything funky, Inc.". Sano began freelancing in 1995 as an illustrator,
aerosol muralist, and currently serves as an "Artist in Residence" at
Cleveland School of the Arts.
